Final 2010 FSWA Industry Insiders Baseball League Championship Standings – ESPN

8 Oct

Here are the final stats. Congratulations to Nicholas Minnix of KFFL as he is the 2010 FSWA IIL Baseball champion. For 2010, he is King of the Fantasy Writers Baseball World.

Also, congratulations to not only Nicholas, but also Pierre Becquey of ESPN and Tim Heaney of KFFL for grinding out wins in their respective divisions. The competition was as good as any league I have been in, and winning the divisions was no easy task. Great work gentlemen!

Nicholas has agreed to also give an “exclusive” interview to Perry Missner for FSWA.org! Also, major thanks one more time to Perry for helping with compiling and updating our Championship statistics on a weekly basis. Perry was right in the thick of the Championship standings from beginning to end, and finished 2nd place overall, and if anything should happen, if any nude photos arise of Nicholas Minnix, he will be take over the mantle of reigning champion.

Nicholas, look for a beautiful trophy, courtesy of FSWA president Mike Beacom, coming soon for your pride and display.

Here are the final standings. In one division, there was a tie for 4th place, thus 13 made it into the Championship standings. To place in this top tier is something that should make your mama proud.

“Nick Minnix of KFFL has re-established his team back at the top of the standings, followed by Perry Missner of College Fantasy Hoops Insider and Pierre Becquey of ESPN. It’s a dogfight right now for those working to find their way into a top-5 finish. Remember that the season ends on October 3rd, unless there is an extra regular season playoff game”. said Mike Jones

Still looking to replace the injured Josh Hamilton I picked up Coco Crisp the day before the series with Boston. Despite reports of a bulky knee I knew Coco would go all out against Boston. I have been rewarded handsomely for my faith in Coco. Crisp has nine steals in five games! Giving him 32 swipes for the season and sitting himself up for a new contract in 2011.

By Hamilton Bolduc

Darryl Houston Smith also continued to build on his successful first half by adding another starting goaltender, Quick, and potential fantasy breakout forwards in Versteeg and Brouwer. Kind of Solid…: Chris Wassel was able to pickup …

Lets take a look at the power rankings following this deep dynasty draft (midway ranking in parenthesis):

1. (1) Darryl Houston Smith: Phenomenal veteran draft and a prospect draft with an understanding of how to stack the goalie position. A-pluses all around. This team has to be the alpha dog for seasons to come.

“Well, there’s been a big move at the top as Perry Missner of College Fantasy Hoops Insider used big weeks from Mark Teixeira and Matt Holliday at the bat and Ichiro Suzuki on the bases to forge a small lead over Nicholas Minnix of KFFL.” said Mike Jones

Here’s the BIG BOARD updated standings. My team has weathered the storm and is currently, 4th in my league and 10th overall. Alex Rodriguez is now available for me after coming off the Disabled List. Trading a healthy Adrian Gonzalez for A-Rod while Rodriguez was on the DL with a calf injury was very risky, but as the Padres continue to struggle offensively around Gonzalez I am confident the move will payoff in much needed extra RBI’s and Runs Scored. I also traded pitching stalwarts Chris Carpenter and Matt Gaza for Ryan Howard this weekend. I only had 4 starts left when the deal was made so it was worth the gamble (Carpenter sure gave me a gem in his last outing). Plus, I still have Jhoulys Chacin to take my final three starts (two this week at home against Cincinnati and Arizona look promising). Andy Pettitte is also on the mend and I might just hold off and wait for Andy to return to make those final 3 starts for me. After all he is 11-2 on the season.

Howard joins my team after tonight’s games and not a moment too soon with MVP candidate Josh Hamilton sidelined for at least a week. Howard always does a lot of damage in September so I certainly hope as Dame Shirley Bassey might sing “I feel history is in for a little bit of repeating.” I also need to send a thank you card to Jim Leyland, as my team now features 6 current or recently departed Detroit Tiger role players. A remarkable total for a championship caliber team. Just goes to show how much players love playing for Coach Leyland.

Rotowire Houston-Smith – Fantasy Baseball Insiders League- ESPN

Rotowire Houston-Smith – Free Fantasy Baseball – ESPN.

Getting down to the autumnal home stretch in the Fantasy Sports Writers Association’s Fantasy Baseball Industry Insiders League.  My club is currently sitting in 2nd place in the Scott White League.  It’s going to be a classic close finish.

My goal remains the same.  Win the league or at least finish in the Top 4 (the top 4 of each FSWA league make the big board at the end of the season).   Realistically, it looks like I will not be able to catch ESPN’s Pierre Becquey, who built a

real statistical juggernaut, so I’m trying to nail down one of the other coveted Top 4 spots.

The end of the season is no time to play it safe so I took a risk recently and traded for Alex Rodriguez for my end of the season run.  A-Rod came at a steep price.  I knew about the calf injury of course (so I anticipated on a little DL time) but still went hard after him regardless.  The team that had him was low in the standings and badly needed help at Catcher and First-base so I packaged All-Star Adrian Gonzalez and catcher Matt Wieters for Rodriguez.

I have led the league all year in OBP and Runs but started to struggle in RBI and SLG once two-fourths of my core; Chase Utley and Kevin Youkillis went down. (Lucky for me I still had Josh Hamilton and Adrian Gonzalez healthy).   I made a few wire pickups Casey McGehee, Jim Thome, Pat Burrell, David Murphy and Chris Denorfia to address these areas of weakness but I was still lacking another major offensive catalyst. So that’s when I targeted Alex Rodriguez.

Which leads me to this bit of fantasy advice; you can’t win at fantasy sports if your not willing to make significant adjustments and take risks.  No one drafts the perfect team and a timely trade along with a few waiver wire pickups can make all the difference in the end.
